Why AGE Myanmar?
Myanmar’s population is ageing. By mid-century, nearly one in every five persons will be 60 years or older. Demographic change creates challenges, but it also provides an opportunity to make better use of the tangible and intangible contributions that older people make to society. Limited support for and engagement by older persons and persons with disabilities will hold the country back and leave at-risk individuals excluded from national development. AGE Myanmar’s vision and mission aim to address these challenges and call attention to emerging opportunities.
In the past, HelpAge International took the lead among NGOs working on ageing and development within Myanmar. But as part of its commitment to locally led development, HelpAge embarked on a localisation process in 2020. HelpAge’s Myanmar Country Office has now been transformed into the new national NGO called AGE Myanmar, whose acronym represents “Alliance for Generations and Empowerment in Myanmar.” With the closure of HelpAge International in Myanmar in 2024, AGE Myanmar is now the only national-level organisation focusing on older people and the intersection of ageing and disability.
